Annual Camp

June 2007

The annual camp for 2007 was a little different from the normal camp. Due to having one of our old PSIs in post with the Jersey Field Squadron, we were able to organize a camp on the island. After a very long overnight trip in a fleet of mini busses we arrived at our accommodation. The TA Centre in Jersey is within walking distance of both the town and the beach. It is also close to one of the heighest points in that opart of the island, which provided an ideal vantage point when it come to MATTs and a little map reading practice.

There were plenty of tasks to give us chance to practice some engineering skills. The first included the restoration of the bunkers which make up a coastal gun emplacement. There was some building work and a lot of cleaning an painting required. At the same time at another location on the Island another two sections were clearing away old German fencing and replacing it with a new fence for the National Trust.

Once those jobs were completed we moved on to a couple of construction tasks at the Durrell Zoo. This work included, clearing and construction of pathways, building a pond for a Teal Aivery and the construction of a wooden walkway and steps. There was also a job at the Jersey War Tunnels clearing away the undergrowth from one of their pathways and clearing out some bunkers.

Between the work we managed to get some adventure training completed and have a little fun. There was a day spent walking along the coastal path on the north coast with some spectacular views. There was also the fancy dress party at the weekend, which everyone from the troop threw themselves at with enthusiasm, even if some were just a little too keen to get 'dressed up'.

We even managed to invade the Liberation Square in order to get a troop photo. In fact, there is no need for an excuse as they all seem to appear as soon as any camera is pulled out.

All in all a very successful camp with all the jobs completed to the satisfaction of the 'customers', everyone having a good time and working hard and everyone getting there and back safely. What more could anyone want?
